Meru National Park
Meru National Park is mostly known for its association to Joy Adamson’s of the Born free film, the movie chronicles the tales of Elsa the lioness as she was adopted to the Kenya Wilderness, having the fact that’s the park is among the major nationals parks in Kenya, this destination is overlooked by most of visitors.
Meru National park is situated about 348kms North East of Nairobi, access to the park can be done from two routes, one from Maua to Murera Gate, which is approximately 35 km and 348 kms from Nairobi, the other gate is accessible via Embu Era route, 120km and 290 km from Nairobi. The park has an airstrip at Kina next to Meru Mulika Lodge, and the famous Elsa\ Kopje airstrip.
As a result of high rainfall within the mount Kenya region the park has tall and dense swamps which hinder game spotting, however the park has a wide range of wildlife which include Elephants, Hippos, Lion, Leopards, Giraffe etc, birding safari can also be interesting there is around 280 recorded species of birds within the Park.
The park has a hurting history especially around nineteen seventies and early eighties when poaching activities were rampant, however this has seized and safety for the natural habitat around the park is being enforced by the Kenya wildlife services personnel. Major attractions is, the former home of Joy and George Adamson, views of Mt Kenya, Rivers and riverine habitations, Tana Rive, Adamson’s Fall, and other wildlife.
