Mombasa is one of the major cities in Kenya and is situated at the Kenyan coast. It is a host to many ethnic groups found in Kenya. Lately, the suburbs surrounding the town have recorded increasing number of foreign settlers mainly of Italian, German and European origins. The main distinction that can be made about Mombasa is the old settlement area, commonly known as the old town. This area is characterized by unique housing architecture which largely reflects the domination effect of the earlier settlers who occupied the trade routes along the East African Coast left on the town (the Portuguese and the Arab traders).

As the biggest town along the coast, Mombasa is an important commercial and administrative centre .The headquarters of the coast province are found here and the Mombasa state house as well. Mombasa is accessible by air through the Moi international airport, road, and rail services or by sea. Due to its history; Mombasa is in its own self a tourist attraction and has become, overtime, a major transit point for those travelling to the Kenyan coast. By visiting the old town, one gets to see the well where the slaves were washed  before being shipped away when the slave trade was at its peak. Further more, you get to see the Fort Jesus which was built as a defense centre during the Portuguese occupation of the town.

Apart from Mombasa town, there are various suburbs within short drive from Mombasa town where visitors can sample the cultural life of the coastal people. Similarly, it is easy to access other fascinating locations such as Malindi, Kilifi, Nyali, Diani, Kwale, Bamburi, Gedi ruins, various public or private beaches and the Marine parks from Mombasa town. Mombasa town and the surrounding suburbs are well served with infrastructure that enables communication with other parts of the world. Accommodation facilities are also available and range from economic class to luxury. A journey to the locations mentioned will always create fond memories for anyone who gets to visit them.
