The city of Nairobi has grown over the years from a small supply depot during the construction of Mombasa-Uganda railway to become one of the most vibrant cities in East Africa. The city hosts the headquarters of numerous national and international organizations. With a high population residing in Nairobi and advances in infrasctrurctue development, Nairobi is included  among the most important cities in Africa.

With these and other developments, Nairobi is now an important cultural integration centre which has been attracting visitors from around the globe. Besides serving as a commercial and administrative centre, Nairobi is an important transit point for those travelling to other counties. With good accommodation facilities and a good transport infrastructure, many visitors often make a stopover in Nairobi before travelling to other tour destinations particularly within the Rift valley, the Western region, the Central region  and the Eastern region  as well. With the promulgation of the new constitution in Kenya, Nairobi is set to become the headquarters of the central government, hosting the offices of key commissions.

In the recent past, new developments can be noted about Nairobi city which visitors ought to know about: the existence of 24 hour convenience stores and complexes where shopping can be done any time, city buildings are clearly numbered making it easy to stroll around, the city centre is soon set to be on 24 hour camera surveillance, there is regulation on alcohol drinking hours and regulated smoking zones in public places. With these developments, visitors have many opportunities to enjoy themselves while in Nairobi. For example, the Nairobi National Park is within a short driving distance from the city centre; the National museum of Kenya is just nearby with the Snake park being adjacent to it, there are numerous public parks such as the Uhuru park, the City Park and the Nairobi Arboretum (visitors can learn a lot about tree species doubled with the likelihood of seeing monkeys at the Nairobi Arboretum).

The railway museum is just located a short distance from the city centre; while here, visitors will get the opportunity to see with their own eyes the claws of the Man eaters of Tsavo, lions famed for killing railway construction workers at Tsavo by Lt. Colonel, J. H. Patterson. Additionally, the train coach in which the lions were trapped and killed is still here and was used for shooting part of the Movie “The Ghost and the darkness”. It is also in this museum that you see an exhibit of various rail engines in use within East Africa during the years gone by.

Further more, there is the National archive at the city centre which has various relics on the Kenyan history. The Bomas of Kenya, the Karen Blixen Mesuem, the Mamba village, the Nairobi safari walk and the animal orphanage are other popular destinations for visitors located in the wider Karengata suburb [Karen-Langata].
