Tsavo West National Park
Tsavo West National Park was established in 1948 and forms part of the greater Tsavo National park, which includes Tsavo West, Tsavo East National parks and Chyulu hills. The park is located about 240 km south East of Nairobi, from Mombasa the location of the park is 200km on the main road of Mombasa Nairobi road. The park consists of mainly lava fileds, granite outcrops, vast open plains, savannah bushland, some Acacia woodland and belts of riverine vegetations.
On the chyulu hills the park is dominated by mountain forest. Tsavo West shares its North Eastern boundary along the Highway with Tsavo East National Park. Major attractions are the Mzima springs, Lake Jipe, Chaimu crater. Mzima springs has its fountains in Chyulu hills, this pool containing natural spring water with underwater viewing hides for observing marine life is very important to the ecosystem around the park. Both Mzima Springs and Lake Jipe are the main source of water in the park. Visiting these water masses never disappoints if your safari intention is spotting game and viewing different bird species. The two nature trails at mzima are recommended if you seek birding safari.
Tsavo west National game reserve has large numbers of buffalo, lion, leopard, Rhinos, Nile crocodiles, Hippos, Maasai Girrafe, Gerenuk, oryx, Zebra, Impala, lesser kudu, Kirks dick dick, among others, primate include baboons and vervet monkeys. There are a number of lodges around the park which are good places to spot wildlife in its natural habitat. These lodges offer good guest accommodations services to any visitors touring the park.
